Anna is one of Oklahoma’s most beloved writers of literature for young people. She has written nineteen published novels and a recent picture book and has received four Oklahoma Book Award medals during her writing career for Red Dirt Jessie, Graveyard Girl, Assassin, and Spy. In addition to receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Oklahoma Center for the Book in 2012 and being inducted into the Oklahoma Writers Hall of Fame in 2013, she has received many more awards and honors from across the country. When Anna was finishing the first grade she announced to her family that instead of graduating to second grade, she would spend the next year teaching the little first graders. Though she didn’ t begin her teaching career at 7, she did at 22, and she spent over twenty years as a junior high English teacher. Retired from teaching now, Anna still loves sharing her passion for words, and for learning, with aspiring writers of all ages and she is excited to be working with HeARTsong Creative Center.
